E&M: We Wander

We Wander cover art

We Wander is the sophomore EP from the San Francisco indie pop duo E&M, aka  Elysha Rom-Povolo and  Mary P. Hansell. Rather than being another Tennis or Beach House, E&M are harder edged, with a post-punk sensibility that is missed by most of the others in this genre. Laced with a slight lo-fi production vibe, E&M deliver an EP that is strong from start to finish. This is definately a pick to garner a wider audience. This is music that is not easily classified, but that definately needs to be experienced. Stream and download mainsHum at the link below.

Emily & the Complexes: Styrofoam Plate Blues

Styrofoam Plate Blues cover art

Columbus, Ohio's Emily & the Complexes are an enigmatic band. No one named Emily, no female members at all for that matter and a sound that is born of  frontman Tyler Verhagen spending several years hitch-hiking around the U.S.playing songs on street corners. Their new album, Styrofoam Plate Blues, shows the seasoning one only acquires through experience. The band is super tight, the songs are accessible, yet with with deep messages. This is an indie rock album that belongs in everyone's collection. Stream and buy Styrofoam Plate Blues at the link below.

The Dirty Nil/Northern Primitive: Split 7"

The Dirty Nil/Northern Primitive Split 7" cover art

Today we have a split 7" from Ontario punkers and FZB favorites The Dirty Nil, with fellow Canadians, Northern Primitive. The Dirty Nil track Zombie Eyed is a racous affair in a similar vein with Off! or Jay Reatard. The track shakes one's senses, in your face and loud, like good punk rock should. Northern Primitive's track Positive Bondar takes a different approach, starting out with a subdued garage vibe and building to an all out cacophonous bashing similar to newer Cloud Nothings.  All in all a wonderful split to start the new year with. Stream the split and download it for free for one month at the link below.

Tacit cover art

Tacit is the new album from Finland based post-metal artist Consciousness Removal Project, aka Antti Loponen. When listening to the eight tracks, the first word that comes to mind is stunning. Heavy, melodic and orchestral, Loponen takes post-metal instrumental music to a new level with virtuoustic performances, dark ambient overtones and compositions that are musically compelling. This may well be the best album of the genre we've ever heard. Stream and download Tacit at the link below.

The Jean Jackets: Jean Jacques

Jean Jacques cover art

Jean Jacques is the debut album from New Jersey indie pop band The Jean Jackets. The twelve tracks are a heady look into the world of the band's two singer songwriters, Jackson Phinney and Christine Spilka. This album stands out for the dark melodic nature of the songs, the lead vocals of Spilka and Phinney, and some soaring harmonies. Where a band like Best Coast can come off as trivial, The Jean Jackets by comparison seam to have something deeper to say and make an engaging work of saying it. Stream and download Jean Jacques for free at the link below.
