Egyptian Wrinkle is the new album from Austin based Boy Friend, aka Christa Palazzolo & Sarah Brown. The duo have made two tracks, Bad Dreams and the title track Egyptian Wrinkle, available for preview from the 10 track album. This strategy is, at best, out of step with today's world of streaming and download. Far fewer people will order a complete album when they have heard only two tracks, but I digress. The tracks themselves are darkish, lo-fi, reverby dreampop. The melodies are haunting and draw the listener into a web of beautiful airy vocals. Minimal instrumentation and beats give more of an ambience than an actual accompaniment. It's the vocals that are the focus. The two tracks certainly leave one wanting more. Winterpop is the sophomore album from The All-About, otherwise know as Fairfield, CT artist Zac Coe. The 11 tracks are catchy and hooky indie pop. There is a familiar feel to the tracks, but at the same time I can't really point to a particuler band that The All-About sounds like. This is a cool quality and says, to me, that the tracks have tapped into a place that is comfortable for me. Think that listeners will also find this nice place from the music. On his Facebook site Coe says this is "dance music written and recorded by people who can't dance for people who can't dance." Gotta love it. These Means Have No End is the sophomore album from Swedish post-punk band Royal Downfall. The album delivers ten tracks of driving, in your face music that, at times, borders more on hardcore. This album is a bit of a lost and found work. Released in December of 2007, the band has not released any followup although they appear to still be together. This album is also currently the most popular album in the post-punk category on Bandcamp, which makes it worth hearing on its own. Pet Milk is a power pop band from Philadelphia. We reviewed their Demos release back in April and now we have a proper EP from the band, Philadelphia Punklife. The EP showcases the band's develoment and maturity since Demos, with four tracks of solid and well produced post punk goodness. The bad presents the songs with confidence, balance and the whole of Philadelphia Punklife is an enjoyable debut from a band that has something to say. A single, a mere two tracks, can't say much about a band. However, in the case of Stalagmites a single speaks volumes. Rarely does a band come around that can just blow one away with two tracks. This is what the debut single from Stalagmites did on my first listen. Instantly these UK shoegazers grabbed me with powerful indie rock. The two songs are excellent, the vocals suberb and the instrumentation is what garage music should be. This is a band that has all the ingrediants for mass appeal. New York Times is the latest EP from NYC dream pop trio Behavior. The five tracks have a lo-fi production texture, heavy reverb on out back vocals and up front synths. The guitars supply wondeful accents and harmonies with interesting phrasing. While the drums are prominent, the bass is, unfortunately, largely lost in the mix. There is a distinct post-punk influence on New York Times and a generally edgier feel than one would find from California dream pop bands. Dempsey is the self-titled debut EP from this San Francisco synthpop duo. The six tracks have a bolder production quality than the usual run of chillwave artists. The beats are heavier, the synths are heavier, there is the occational lo-fi-aesthetic and twangy, reverby guitars, while the vocals are strong, not pushed back. Dempsey gives us an evolution of synthpop, where the genre moves closer to both electronica and indie rock. The whole package is a welcome blend of the best of these influences.
